Editor responsible for the content and production of 8 career guides aimed at an undergraduate audience.
Printed guides
The annual print run was approximately 80,000 guides at a print cost of £60,000. I was also responsible for sourcing printers and ensuring that production costs remained within budget.
Production work included:
- Commissioning content, communicating with authors and copy editing articles.
- Design of a new page layout and cover resulting in a dramatic improvement of the existing guides.
- Image manipulation, page layout and formatting using QuarkXPress.
- Working with Saatchi and Saatchi to refine cover design and marketing materials.
- Liaising with advertisers to organise page layouts and delivery of advertising materials (film, EPS files etc).
- Setting up a production system utilising QuarkXPress, PDF and EPS files.
- Complex book planning for full-colour and spot-colour sections to control costs.
- Database design with Microsoft Access.
- Liaising with printers to ensure proper planning of deliverables.
- Proofing of pre-press materials.
Detailed planning was required to meet strict deadlines. Other tasks included the management and coordination of freelances and production staff and ensuring that client needs were met.
